OK, there may be no such thing as a “perfect” business, but in this article I’m going to show you why information publishing is probably as close to a perfect business as you’ll ever get - and in future follow up articles I’ll show you precisely how you can make money as an information publisher - we’ll even do it together!

Firstly, what exactly is “information publishing”?

At its simplest level, what I mean by an “information publisher” is someone who sells information. Often this information will be in electronic book format, but it could also be in the format of a book, video, CD or DVD course, or as a seminar or workshop.

Why is information publishing so profitable?

There are really only four main reasons people use the Internet - to communicate with others, for entertainment, to shop, and to find and gather information.

While it’s perfectly possible to make money from communication and entertainment, and it’s obviously possible to make money when people are shopping online, I think the easiest, quickest and most profitable area is information, which is why I’m going to focus on it.

More specifically, people who use the Internet to find and gather information may be doing so because they have specific problems, and are looking for answers and solutions to their problems.

And so this is the key to making money from information publishing…

Find a niche market of potential buyers, find out the
problems they have, and then sell them the solutions!

And that’s really all there is to it! Obviously I’ll need to be more specific, and explain how to do each one in more detail, which I will certainly do in follow up posts. In the meantime, if people are using the Internet to find answers to their problems, this begs the question…

Why would people pay for information they can probably find for free?

Even though they have search engines and other wonderful ways of finding information online, searching for just the right information can be time-consuming, and require a lot of effort.

Very often, people prefer to simply buy a product which contains all the information they need, in one place.

And so by selling them the solutions they’re looking for, you’re making their life so much easier and saving them the effort of hours, days and weeks of research - you’re saving them valuable time that is so precious to them nowadays.

Just about anyone can become an information publisher!

I really believe that selling information online is one of the easiest businesses that nearly anyone can do, because it requires no experience beyond a basic knowledge of how to do it.

You can do it without having to stock any physical products at all. For that reason, you can run it from anywhere in the world, and you don’t need any staff.

Since your products can be downloadable, you can set it up so that delivery of the product works on auto-pilot, meaning people can order and receive the product even if you’re asleep!

Unlike a bricks-and-mortar business, an online information publishing business is very low risk, and you can potentially see good returns very quickly.

So how can you become an information publisher?

I have one piece of bad news, and two pieces of good news. First, the bad news. There’s a couple of things you’ll need to know in order to become an information publisher, such as how to find a niche that is going to be profitable, how to create a product in the first place, and how to sell and promote it.

That sounds like a lot of things, doesn’t it? Well, the good news is that it’s a lot easier than it sounds.
